Appendix F. Determining earthquake recurrence rates

چکیده

For each earthquake, a set of source parameters must be chosen that determines the initial condition for propagation modeling. Earthquakemagnitude is the primary parameter that links other source parameters such as rupture area and average amount of slip. Unlike deterministic modeling in which recurrence rates are not considered, probabilistic modeling requires the determination of recurrence rate for each source used in inundation modeling. Recurrence rates can be determined from frequency-magnitude distributions as follows.

Triggering Effect of M 4–5 Earthquakes on the Earthquake Cycle of Repeating Events at Parkfield, California

Stress perturbations influence earthquake recurrence and are of fundamental importance to understanding the earthquake cycle and determining earthquake hazard. The large population of repeating earthquakes on the San Andreas fault at Parkfield, California, provides a unique opportunity to examine the response of the repeating events to the occurrence of moderate earthquakes. Using 187 M 0:4 to ...

THE SFBR EARTHQUAKE SOURCE MODEL: MAGNITUDES AND LONG-TERM RATES Introduction: Calculating Rupture Source Rates in a Complex Model

The tectonically complex San Francisco Bay Region (SFBR) contains both known and unidentified faults that produce a broad range of earthquake sizes at different rates of occurrence. In this chapter we use fault zone information developed in the previous chapter to construct an earthquake source model that describes long-term rates of earthquake production in the SFBR. Specifically, this SFBR ea...

Study on Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Maps of Taiwan after Chi-chi Earthquake

Probabilistic seismic hazard maps are widely used for engineering design, land use planning, and disaster mitigation etc. This study conducted a review of readily available information on tectonic setting, geology, and seismicity, and the attenuation of peak ground acceleration (PGA) of Taiwan for completing the revised probabilistic seismic hazard maps by the state-of-the-art probabilistic sei...

Monte Carlo method for determining earthquake recurrence parameters from short paleoseismic catalogs: Example calculations for California

[1] Paleoearthquake observations often lack enough events at a given site to directly define a probability density function (PDF) for earthquake recurrence. Sites with fewer than 10–15 intervals do not provide enough information to reliably determine the shape of the PDF using standard maximum-likelihood techniques (e.g., Ellsworth et al., 1999). In this paper I present a method that attempts t...

Paleoseismic interevent times interpreted for an unsegmented earthquake rupture forecast

[1] Forecasters want to consider an increasingly rich variety of earthquake ruptures. Past occurrence is captured in part by paloeseismic observations, which necessarily see threedimensional ruptures only at a point. This has not been a problem before, because forecasts have assumed that faults are segmented, and that repeated ruptures occur uniformly along them. A technique is now required to ...
